Gone with the Wind
After years of having it on my list but never getting around to it, I've finally watched Gone with the Wind. And I must say I wasn't disappointed. Some movies are highly touted but fail to impress, but in this case I fully accept Gone with the Wind's status as one of the great films in history.

You're right, Gone With The Wind is an epic film. Now why is it important we know you're not from Ohio. I went to Uni in Ohio, but I'm from Ireland. I loved Ohio.

Because there is a type of mentality I've commonly encountered among Ohio natives, and it's quite different from my own.

ReplyDeleteA while back I was reading up on the top-grossing films of all time, and it was my impression that if ticket prices had remained equal, GWTW would still be the top-grossing film of all time. The problem is they don't track the actual number of tickets sold, so 3D movies w/ extra-high prices (like the garbage that is Avatar) get an unfair advantage, as do all more modern and more expensive movies.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the movie itself, I've never watched it and it's not on my list. Old movies are usually pretty tough for me to get into, with the campy theater-style acting, undynamic camera work, and slower pacing. On the other hand, many of the really new movies go too far the other direction in terms of camera work, especially the big blockbusters (I couldn't figure out what was happening in the chase scenes of the new Bond movies).
Well I had the advantage of growing up watching a fair number of old movies, so they really don't bother me. In fact, I'll go through an occasional phase where all I feel like watching are silent films. Compared with those, Gone with the Wind is a downright dazzling technical marvel.
ReplyDeleteThere have been some exceptions to my usual difficulty in getting into old movies: Judgment at Nuremberg, The Vikings, and Rear Window are the only ones I can think of offhand.
